YOUTH CLASSES

Imagination Explorers (Ages 6-8) With Kate Basile

A space for budding actors to express themselves through theatrical play, laying the foundations for scenes, improv and character all in a fun and supportive environment! Explorers will share in the Theatre School Showcase in December.

Beginner Acting (Ages 9-12) with Kate Basile

October 24 – November 28  |  Mondays 5:30-7:00pm  |  $110.00
Whether your aspiring actor is new to theatre or still growing their confidence, beginner acting is the perfect environment for them to flourish! We will cover the basics of character, improv and scene work culminating in a final presentation at the Theatre School Showcase in December.

Mini Company (Ages 9-12) with Kate Basile

October 26- November 30  |  Wednesdays 6:00-7:30pm  |  $110.00
Mini Company actors will advance as actors and ensemble members as they work together to create their own play! The final piece will be performed at the Theatre School Showcase in December. Intermediate and advanced level performers are welcome!

Ensemble Acting for Teens (Ages 13-17) with Kate Basile

October 26 – November 30  |  Wednesdays 3:00-5:00pm  |  $125.00
A supportive and fun space where teen actors will strengthen their acting technique while growing as an ensemble. Individual growth will be the focus for our fall semester with monologue and scene work. These strong foundations will be followed by a devised process in the winter semester! Priority registration for winter semester will be held for returning students. All students will be included in a Theatre School Showcase in December!

Unarmed Stage Combat Workshop for Youths with Jean-Michel Cliche

November 20 | 1:00-4:00pm | $50.00
Budding actors of every experience level can join us on November 20th for an unparalleled acting lesson: the foundations of unarmed stage combat. An important tool in any actor’s toolkit, this process relies on pre-set choreography as well as physical techniques to create the illusion of violence on stage. Students will grow confidence as well as respect for themselves and their fellow actors as they learn the process of choreo. Ages 12 and up!

LOCATION: StFX University Auxiliary Gymnasium

Jean-Michel Cliche (he/him) is a theatre artist of Lebanese and French settler descent based out of Wolastoq (Fredericton, NB). He is the Co-Artistic Director of Solo Chicken Productions and the Artistic Director of Hyperloop Theatre. He is a certified actor-combatant with the Academy of Fight Directors Canada, and works as a fight director and violence designer throughout New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. As a playwright, his plays have been performed and workshopped by Theatre New Brunswick, NotaBle Acts Theatre Festival, Lunchbox Theatre, The Saint John Theatre Co, and Theatre UNB. His play Space Girl was performed as the NotaBle Acts Theatre Festival 2020 Main Stage show and was later performed at Eastern Front Theatre’s STAGES Theatre Festival, Victoria Fringe and Toronto Fringe in 2021. Jean-Michel is also a theatre educator. He teaches drama at the University of New Brunswick and improv comedy through Solo Chicken Productions.

ADULT CLASSES

Acting 101 with Laura Teasdale (Ages 18+)

November 1 – November 29  | Tuesday 6:30-8:30pm  | $135.00
In this class we will learn some tricks of the trade. We’ll explore what you’re doing on stage, both physically and mentally. We’ll learn how actors read scripts to help remember their lines and movement. We’ll practice monologues and group scenes using fun scripts in a relaxed, pressure-free environment.  It’s all about creating confidence by having some truly useful tools. Adaptable for all levels of experience.

Scenery and Prop Creation with Ian Pygott (Ages 18+)

October 29 – December 3  | Saturdays 1:00-3:00pm  |  $135.00
What do a brick wall, a rock and a cupcake have in common with a chicken? Answer: they’re all made out of foam! Delve into the world of scenery and prop creation, where you will learn how to take basic materials such as styrofoam and spray foam and create a new environment for the stage!

Puppet Making with Laura Stinson

Adults and Youths 12 and up! (12-16 year-olds must be accompanied by an adult also enrolled in the class.)

Explore the wondrous world of puppet making as you create your own character! Join The Hobbit’s fantastic puppet maker, Laura Stinson, for a four week workshop. Participants will select their own choice of puppet style to work with. The styles available are Muppets, table top puppets, large carnival puppets, papier mache masks and hand puppets.

Unarmed Stage Combat Workshop for Adults with Jean-Michel Cliche (Ages 18+)

November 19 | 1:00-4:00pm | $50.00
Join us on Saturday, November 19th and learn how to beat up your friends! Or, rather, spend the afternoon creating the illusion of staged violence in a safe and fun environment as you explore the foundations of unarmed stage combat! During the workshop, students will learn the basic acting and fighting techniques that come together to tell a compelling story of violence. Every experience level is welcome!

Play Reading Club

First Friday of every month beginning November 4th and December 2nd
Join us for a new monthly series: Play Reading Club! New and experienced theatre enthusiasts are welcome as we foster our love for theatre in a fun, casual environment. Each month a new play will be read by actors at random from our group, followed by a discussion of the play. There is no fee for attending however sign-up is required on a first-come basis.
