Antigonish, NS (July 24, 2017) – Festival Antigonish Summer Theatre is bringing an award-winning play for young audiences to its Family Stage at the Bauer Theatre.
Martha, written by Andy Manley, Gill Robertson and Annie Wood for the Catherine Wheels Theatre Company in the UK, has won several international awards, including Best Production at the 2008 Shanghai International Children’s Festival.
A funny and tender story about friendship, Martha is sure to delight all ages with its charming story, delightful puppetry, and original music. The play is being directed by Richie Wilcox, and features Sansom Marchand and Naomi Vogt.
In the play, the audience meets Martha, who lives alone in a house by the sea and likes it that way. When the postman comes calling she shoos him away, wanting nothing to do with anyone. Then one day, a goose lands at her doorstep, and his persistence and frisky personality finally charm her into friendship.
Artistic Director Andrea Boyd saw this play many years ago in Scotland, and she is thrilled to bring it here to Festival Antigonish. “This is a lovely play that will be enjoyed by children and their parents, and really anyone who is young-at-heart. It brings together a talented team of artists from our Young Company and I cannot wait for the play to open next week”. Martha replaces the popular Robert Munsch show that was presented on the Family Stage for the past several years, as a fresh and fun theatre experience for young audiences.
Martha opens on July 25th with a pay-what-you-can preview, and continues with daily shows (except Sunday) until August 5th. All shows take place at 10 am at the Bauer Theatre. General admission. Tickets are $12, or $40 for a family of four. For more details and a complete show schedule, please visit www.festivalantigonish.com or call (902) 867-3333.
The Festival Antigonish Summer Theatre Family Stage is sponsored by East Coast Credit Union.
Showing on the Main Stage with evening performances in July are The Hound of the Baskervilles, a fast-paced hilarious spoof of the beloved Sherlock Holmes mystery, and Kingfisher Days, a nostalgic and humourous play based on the memoir by Canadian author Susan Coyne. Stage Kiss by Sarah Ruhl joins the lineup in August.
