Opening the Doors at Festival Anigonish Summer Theatre

Jun 6, 2017 | News - 2017 Season

Antigonish, NS – Festival Antigonish Summer Theatre is celebrating 30 years by opening its doors in new ways.

The Festival has introduced Pay-What-You-Can Preview performances for all Main Stage and Family Stage productions. These preview shows will offer a chance for anyone to enjoy professional theatre by making it more open, accessible, and inclusive. It also provides an opportunity for the theatre’s board and staff to thank its patrons for their loyalty and support over three decades. “This brand new initiative is an important one for us. We want to share the experience of live theatre with as many people as possible. We are fortunate to have some of Nova Scotia’s most talented actors and professionals in our company, and we want to share that pride with everyone”, says Managing Director Reema Fuller.

The Pay-What-You-Can Preview shows are made possible through the generous support of Keltic Ford and Bell Aliant. Doors open thirty minutes before show time and patrons are invited to make a donation at the door as they enter the theatre on a first-come, first-seated basis.

Another new addition to this year’s schedule is a Relaxed Performance. This special performance (one night only) is open to everyone, but the environment will be specifically adapted to relax the traditional expectations around silence, darkness, and stillness in the theatre. It is designed to benefit a wide range of individuals, including but not limited to people with autism, those living with sensory and/or communication disorders, parents with babes-in-arms, and anyone who would welcome a more relaxed environment. “Relaxed performances are a growing trend in the world of theatre, and rightfully so. Theatre is meant to be open and inclusive and I am so pleased to be able to introduce this important initiative in my first season at Festival Antigonish”, says Artistic Director Andrea Boyd. “Too often, we get caught up in the formality around theatre, and in doing so, we end up alienating or excluding those who – for one reason or another – may feel uncomfortable about the experience”. This year’s relaxed performance will be offered on Saturday, July 15th at 8 pm for The Hound of the Baskervilles – a three-man spoof of the classic Sherlock Holmes tale.

The Festival’s 30th season kicks off with an Open House celebration on Thursday, June 29th from 5-7 pm at the Bauer Theatre at StFX University. Everyone is invited to enjoy a BBQ, cake, live music, ticket specials, a behind-the-scenes peek with our cast and crew, and the unveiling of a special commemorative artwork being created by local artist Kate Georgallas.
