Bridge the Bauer Campaign Enters Final Stretch with Provincial and Federal Support

Festival Antigonish confirms approximately $590,000 toward $750,000 Bauer Theatre retrofit target

Festival Antigonish is sharing an important update on the Bridge the Bauer campaign as contractor bids for the Bauer Theatre fire and life-safety retrofit enter their final stage of review.

Based on the bids now under review, and allowing for remaining professional fees, testing, and contingency, Festival Antigonish is now planning around a total remaining project target of approximately $750,000. Construction is expected to begin in September, once contractor selection and final scope review are complete.

The project is larger than early estimates suggested, reflecting the complexity of completing a major life-safety retrofit in an older building. The required work is tied to fire and building code compliance and includes upgrades to fire separations, doors, sprinkler-related systems, ventilation and smoke-control measures, and related life-safety systems.

“As anyone who has renovated an older building knows, the real conditions are not always fully visible until work begins,” said Caleb Marshall, Managing Director of Festival Antigonish. “We are being especially careful around electrical conditions, building systems, and final scope confirmation. But the important news is that the path forward is now clear.”

That path has been made possible through significant support from community donors, the Festival Antigonish Foundation, the Province of Nova Scotia, ACOA, and pledges already committed for 2026.

Festival Antigonish has now confirmed approximately $590,000 toward the remaining scope of the project, including contractor work and remaining architectural fees. This does not include approximately $70,000 in Bridge the Bauer expenses already incurred and paid for to advance the project through engineering, architectural planning, compliance review, and bid preparation.

The Province of Nova Scotia has committed $50,000 through the Community Facilities Improvement Program, and ACOA has committed $120,000 toward the project.

Festival Antigonish has also been invited to submit a priority application to the Build Communities Strong Fund after the project was identified for further consideration by Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada. While this is not a funding confirmation, it is an encouraging step, and Festival Antigonish is actively pursuing this and other sources so the remaining gap does not fall solely on community donors.

“This is an extraordinary show of confidence in the Bauer Theatre and in the role it plays in Antigonish,” said Dr. Minoli Amit, Chair of the Festival Antigonish Board of Directors and fundraising committee. “We are deeply grateful for the generous community support that has brought us this far, and for the leadership shown by our government, foundation, and donor partners. With approximately $590,000 now confirmed toward a $750,000 target, we are close — but we still need to raise roughly $150,000 to complete the project with confidence.”

Festival Antigonish is particularly grateful to the Province of Nova Scotia for its support at a time when arts organizations across the province are navigating significant funding pressures.

“At a time when the cultural sector is navigating significant budget pressures, this provincial commitment is especially meaningful,” said Marshall. “It is a clear investment in community infrastructure, rural culture, accessibility, education, and the shared spaces that help make Antigonish vibrant.”

The Bauer Theatre, located on the StFX campus, has served for decades as the home of Festival Antigonish Summer Theatre and Theatre Antigonish. It supports professional theatre, student learning, youth programming, community events, relaxed performances, access initiatives, and partnerships with local organizations.

Festival Antigonish says the next phase of Bridge the Bauer will focus on closing the remaining gap before construction begins.

“This project is not falling on the shoulders of the community alone,” said Marshall. “Federal, provincial, foundation, donor, and community support are all helping move the Bauer forward, and we are actively pursuing every appropriate funding path available. But the community still matters. Every gift now helps protect the September construction timeline and ensures the work can be completed properly.”

Festival Antigonish will continue building momentum through the Bridge the Bauer campaign, including the upcoming benefit concert All Roads Lead Home with Carolyn Curry, taking place Friday, June 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Bauer Theatre.

Part memoir and part musical celebration, the concert will feature Carolyn Curry performing original works alongside the songs and shows that first called her to the stage, with special guests joining for an evening in support of the campaign.

“For artists and audiences, the Bauer is more than a building — it is where stories are shared, relationships are formed, and community is made,” said Andrea Boyd, Artistic Director of Festival Antigonish. “This concert is about gathering in the space we are working so hard to protect, and celebrating what the Bauer has meant, what it still means, and what it can continue to mean for generations to come.”
